Fire safety in the home

Helping you keep your home safe and reduce the risk of fire.

We explain the basics of safe housing and fire prevention. It tells you what you can do, what your landlord must do, and how to get help if you are worried about safety in your home.

Housing safety standards

Your home must be safe, secure and free from hazards. This includes:

  • structural safety: the building should be stable and in good repair
  • electrical safety: wiring, sockets and fuse boxes must be checked and safe
  • gas safety: gas appliances must be inspected every year
  • damp and mould: your home should be well ventilated and free from damp
  • asbestos
  • water
  • Healthy homes (HHSRS): extreme heat, cold and damp and mould

If you think your home is unsafe, report it to your landlord or housing provider as soon as possible.

Fire safety in the home

You can reduce the risk of fire by taking simple steps:

  • fit smoke alarms on every floor
  • test alarms once a month
  • keep heaters clear and turn them off when not in use
  • do not overload plug sockets
  • keep fire exits/escape routes clear
  • mobility scooters, e-bikes and bicycles must be stored safely and not left in communal areas

Your landlord must provide working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. They must repair or replace them if they stop working.

What to do in an emergency

If there is a fire:

  • get out
  • stay out
  • call 999

You should also plan ahead. Make a simple escape plan and make sure everyone in your home knows it.

  • Create a home escape plan
  • Agree on a safe meeting point outside
  • Keep keys where you can find them quickly
